 The Fiber Optic Expansion I/O System (FOX) is an innovative bus extension that greatly expands the number of standard SmartStack™ I/O that can be used with the Operator Control Station (OCS), as well as adding a variety of architecture options and is available in both metal and plastic versions to suit your product requirements.
SmartStack I/O are rugged, stackable I/O modules for the OCS. By stacking SmartStack modules on bases connected to the OCS by plastic fiber, you can add up to 20 SmartStack I/O modules. And the FOX Bases can be distributed and DIN-rail mounted to reduce installation cost. SmartStack FOX is not a remote I/O system, but a high speed (8MHz) bus extension. It is based on inexpensive plastic fiber technology that has been used in the consumer electronics industry for years. Plastic fiber is much more rugged than glass fiber, supporting bend radii as small as 25mm (one inch).
Increases I/O Capacity
Each FOX Base can support up to 4 SmartStack modules. You can have a maximum of 5 FOX Bases and they can support up to 20 I/O modules in total plus any mounted directly to the OCS. For OCS units that do not have integrated Fiber Optic Connection (OCS1XX/2XX) a FOX100 SmartStack Expansion Module can be used. This then is a simple and cost effective way to dramatically increase I/O capacity to a maximum of 23 units.
More Installation Options
SmartStack FOX supports a variety of architectures, offering greater flexibility in I/O layout. These include Star, Daisy-chain, or Combination. Each SmartStack FOX cable segment can be up to 10m in length, with no Base/Hub located more than three segments (3x10m) from the OCS. Standard SmartStack FOX cables are offered in 0.5m, 1.0m, 2.0m, 5.0m, and 10m lengths.

The SmartStack modules can be safely
mounted a short distance from the display using expansion
bases and inexpensive dual fiber optic cables. Using the
same technology employed by residential audio systems like
CD and DVD players, the OCS300's plastic fiber optic cables
not only keep the cost of the unit down, but also make it
easier for the OEM or end user to obtain additional cables,
as they can be found in most consumer hardware and electronics
stores.
All SmartStack modules can be safely
mounted 10 metres from the OCS300 display using this expansion
system and dual plastic fiber optic cables.
New Next Generation FOX I/O Bases...the HE-FOX30 and HE-FOX12
The SmartStack Fiber Optic Expansion (FOX) Base extends a high-speed OCS back plane enabling PLASTIC SmartStack I/O Modules to be mounted several meters from the OCS. The new PLASTIC FOX significantly increases the number of Plastic SmartStack I/O modules supported by one OCS Series controller providing two mounting options and supporting glass fiber optic cable.
Our newly designed, plastic encased FOX base can be DIN rail mounted on its edge or flat. The new HE-FOX12 expansion base allows connectivity up to 500 meters utilizing glass fiber cables.
